DEN operates as a student-led, globally connected model of knowledge exchange, integrating teaching, research, and public engagement

DEN is driven by students at the University of Westminster, is dedicated to empowering learners through collaboration, research, and global engagement. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the University’s 2023–2029 strategy, DEN integrates student voice into teaching, research, and international partnerships. It provides a platform for students to develop as critical thinkers, researchers, and global citizens, helping them reach their full academic and professional potential.

What is DEN? We are the Democratic Education Network, a student-focused initiative at the University of Westminster. We work together to make students more locally and globally engaged, acquire transferable skills that empower them and enhance their employability and awareness of diverse communities around them. DEN is supported by The Centre for Education and Teaching Innovation (CETI) and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) at the University of Westminster.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

DEN believes education should be democratic, inclusive, and transformative. We create spaces where students lead discussions, share perspectives, and connect their work to urgent global challenges. Our values include:

  • Collaboration & Respect – fostering mutual respect while building partnerships across disciplines, communities, and countries.
  • Creativity – encouraging expression through blogs, art, podcasts, and student publications.
  • Global Citizenship – linking local experiences to worldwide challenges.
  • Sustainability – aligning our initiatives with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

HOW WE WORK

Through student-led initiatives and partnerships, DEN provides opportunities that go beyond the classroom. Students engage in:

  • Writing and publishing blogs, magazines, and books.
  • Designing and leading workshops, events, and conferences.
  • Creating art, photography, and media projects that highlight global issues.
  • Collaborating with universities and communities worldwide to exchange knowledge and perspectives.

OUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY

Every project has been a collaborative work led, managed and delivered by students. DEN has turned into a platform to engage students, to encourage them to freely move around different projects and to express their interests and passion for being creative and imaginative.

OUR PROJECT

The Democratic Education Network (DEN) is more than a project — it is a community of students, staff, and global partners dedicated to learning through collaboration, creativity, and critical engagement

LOOKING AHEAD

As DEN grows, our vision is to expand global collaborations and explore new ways of combining education, sustainability, and innovation. We remain committed to empowering students to challenge inequalities, foster dialogue, and imagine a more just and inclusive future.

OUR AIMS

DEN, aims to contribute to inspiring and encouraging students to engage locally and globally while enhancing their employability skills.  Aside from engaging students, this allowed them to create an environment where they develop a relationship with their past and put it at the heart of their education.

OUR PARTNERS

Bringing together students from different backgrounds, at DEN we have developed links with various local community groups and international universities.
