International Peacebuilding

DEN collaborates with international partners and civil society to empower students as agents of peace through knowledge development, dialogue, and civic engagement. By centering student voices alongside academic experts and community members, DEN creates spaces where young people actively participate in peacebuilding—from dialogue activities that foster reconciliation to student-led conferences and creative projects exploring war heritage and paths to peace. Recent initiatives, such as the VJ Day Symposium (May 2025), demonstrate how students engage through speaking, organization, and reflective writing to connect historical understanding with contemporary peacebuilding. Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals 4, 10, 16, and 17, DEN’s work recognizes that peace-building is fundamentally an educational endeavour—one that empowers students to become active global citizens capable of shaping just and peaceful societies.

International peacebuilding at DEN is not only about understanding conflict—it is a space where students critically analyse global issues, engage with communities, and contribute to knowledge and dialogue on peace, justice, and reconciliation.

Conflict Awareness → Reflection → Research → Publication → Dialogue → Impact

DEN, in collaboration with local communities, international partners, and civil society, train students for lasting peace through knowledge and skill development. Student engagement stands as the central focus of this work because it enables young people to participate in learning activities and share their ideas while working together with academic experts and practitioners and community members from different countries.

The peace-building programs of DEN promote dialogue activities which help people reconcile with each other while working together to find solutions for common problems. The university community benefits from these activities, which also advance the global mission to create peaceful societies where people can live together successfully.

The Victory over Japan (VJ) Day Symposium, which DEN organised in May 2025, serves as a prime example of their dedication to peacebuilding. The symposium united students with veterans and historians and international partners to explore war heritage and its value for modern peace construction. The students took part in the event through speaking engagements and organisational work, and by writing reflective blog entries which demonstrated the direct link between peacebuilding and educational and civic duties.

All of DEN’s peacebuilding work is linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 4 – Quality Education, by creating spaces for students to engage critically with history and contemporary conflicts.
  • SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities, by amplifying diverse voices and perspectives in peace dialogues.
  • SDG 16 – Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions, by fostering understanding, reconciliation, and trust across communities.
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, by collaborating with international universities, NGOs, and community organisations.

Through these initiatives, DEN highlights that peace-building is not only about resolving conflicts but also about educating and empowering students to become active global citizens who can engage and shape a more just and peaceful world.

Through field trips, student-led conferences, workshops, and creative projects, DEN offers a platform where young people explore the human cost of war, instability and peace, and the possibilities of reconciliation. Students are encouraged to use both academic research and creative writing to engage with global challenges in innovative and powerful ways.
