Community Work

One of the core principles of DEN is to establish a strong connection between students at the University of Westminster and the local community. Members of DEN actively participate in University initiatives, gaining a comprehensive understanding of events such as Black History Month, LGBT History Month, Interfaith and Secularism workshops, and more. DEN has successfully organised events like “Challenging Prejudices, Celebrating Diversity” and “World in Westminster.” The network empowers students to collaborate with other student societies and departments, enabling them to lead projects that have a positive impact on the Westminster community.

Local Colleges in London

DEN has collaborated with several further education and sixth-form colleges, including the Capital City College Group and Leyton Sixth Form College. Through these partnerships, we provide comprehensive support to college students. This includes offering guidance on the application process for various courses, inviting them to join our classes, and involving them in workshops. With the support of our students and teachers, the students have contributed to DEN’s online magazine. Additionally, we offer opportunities for students to present at DEN’s annual International Student Conference, creating a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration.

Our deep commitment to the community was acknowledged in 2024 with an award from City and Islington College in London for our exceptional collaboration. This recognition reinforces our core values of diligence, respect, care, and collaboration, and it inspires us to keep making a positive impact in the world.

Hopetowns community

The Democratic Education Network (DEN) has lent its support and solidarity to the community group Hopetowns, which works with asylum seeking individuals in London. The initial contact started in 2018 and since then there have been various visits between community leaders, academics, students and refugee both in the community centre and at the University of Westminster.

S4R

STUDENT4REFUGEES (S4R) is a student-led organisation formed within the Democratic Education Network (DEN) to engage with our local communities and make a change for refugees. S4R invites all students to participate in various projects throughout the year to contribute to making a change and fundraising. We aim to raise awareness of the refugee crises and to build connections with refugees and other organisations, developing our understanding of history, politics and social conditions, as well as our skills to manage and communicate.
